MIDDLE SCHOOL STATE ASSEMBLY

Ohio YMCA Youth & Government brings the workings of state government to life for students in grades 6–8 through a hands-on, two-day experience at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus.

Before the State Assembly, local delegations work together on debate practices, service-learning projects, fundraising, and preparing legislation. At the State Assembly, students step into the roles of elected officials, debate and vote on bills written by their peers, and participate in mock committee meetings and legislative sessions.

Students conduct their business in the actual chambers and committee rooms of the Ohio Statehouse, giving them a unique opportunity to experience the legislative process firsthand. They also connect with students from across Ohio and participate in campaigns and elections for youth leaders who will serve the following year.

The conference is led by students elected to leadership positions, including Speaker of the House and President of the Senate.

Legislative Program

The Legislative Program is based as closing as possible to the Ohio General Assembly. The program strives to turn the ideas of Ohio youth into formal laws by writing, debating, and voting on legislation according to the specific rules and procedures.

2027 State Assembly Information

State Assembly Date: January 17-18, 2027

Cost: TBD (Financial Aid Application available here)

Location: The Renaissance Hotel in downtown Columbus and the Ohio Statehouse

Deadlines: Registration and Bill Submission are will go live in late September through November 20th. A unique link will be sent to advisors via email to see their roster of registrants and bill submissions.

Registration Includes: All conference meals, commemorative bill book, conference t-shirt, sitting in the hallowed chambers of the Statehouse, tons of fun and lifelong friendships!
