Program Area Resources

Middle school students (6th-8th grade) may participate in the Legislative or Governor’s Cabinet Program Areas for the 2027 State Assembly.

Students take on the roles of state Senators and Representatives in the Legislature. Before the State Assembly, each student writes a proposed bill, individually or with one partner, outlining a law they would like to see enacted at the state level.

During the State Assembly, students and their bills are assigned to a committee and either the House or the Senate. Throughout the program the students, acting Senators and Representatives, discuss their bill in committee and in session. Once the bill passes committee, as well as House and Senate, it is then put onto the Youth Governors desk to be signed into law or vetoed.

Students work as a team to advance and advocate for the Governor’s agenda and priorities in the Governor’s Cabinet program. Cabinet members testify in legislative committees, speak one-on-one with fellow students, and occasionally address larger groups to build support for the Governor’s initiatives.

Additionally, students interview bill authors, examine proposed legislation, and provide recommendations to help the Youth Governor determine whether to sign or veto bills.

Additional application required in addition to State Assembly Registration.
